Globular Clusters as Candidates for Gravitational Lenses to Explain Quasar-Galaxy Associations
We argue that globular clusters (GCs) are good candidates forgravitational lenses in explaining quasar-galaxy associations. Thecatalog of associations (Bukhmastova 2001) compiled from the LEDAcatalog of galaxies (Paturel 1997) and from the catalog of quasars(Veron-Cetty and Veron 1998) is used. Based on the new catalog, we showthat one might expect an increased number of GCs around irregulargalaxies of types 9 and 10 from the hypothesis that distant compactsources are gravitationally lensed by GCs in the halos of foregroundgalaxies. The King model is used to determine the central surfacedensities of 135 GCs in the Milky Way. The distribution of GCs incentral surface density was found to be lognormal.

The WSRT wide-field H I survey. I. The background galaxy sample
We have used the Westerbork array to carry out an unbiased wide-fieldsurvey for H I emission features, achieving an RMS sensitivity of about18 mJy/Beam at a velocity resolution of 17 km s-1 over 1800deg2 and between -1000 < VHel <+6500 kms-1. The primary data consists of auto-correlation spectrawith an effective angular resolution of 49' FWHM, althoughcross-correlation data were also acquired. The survey region is centeredapproximately on the position of Messier 31 and is Nyquist-sampled over60x 30o in RA x Dec. More than 100 distinct features aredetected at high significance in each of the two velocity regimes(negative and positive LGSR velocities). In this paper we present theresults for our H I detections of external galaxies at positive LGSRvelocity. We detect 155 external galaxies in excess of 8sigma inintegrated H I flux density. Plausible optical associations are foundwithin a 30' search radius for all but one of our H I detections in DSSimages, although several are not previously cataloged or do not havepublished red-shift determinations. Our detection without a DSSassociation is at low galactic latitude. Twenty-three of our objects aredetected in H I for the first time. We classify almost half of ourdetections as ``confused'', since one or more companions is catalogedwithin a radius of 30' and a velocity interval of 400 km s-1.We identify a handful of instances of significant positional offsetsexceeding 10 kpc of unconfused optical galaxies with the associated H Icentroid, possibly indicative of severe tidal distortions or uncatalogedgas-rich companions. A possible trend is found for an excess of detectedH I flux in unconfused galaxies within our large survey beam relative tothat detected previously in smaller telescope beams, both as function ofincreasing distance and increasing gas mass. This may be an indicationfor a diffuse gaseous component on 100 kpc scales in the environment ofmassive galaxies or a population of uncataloged low mass companions. Weuse our galaxy sample to estimate the H I mass function from our surveyvolume. A search for Low Surface Brightness galaxies in the near-infrared. I. Selection of the sample
A sample of about 3800 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies wasselected using the all-sky near-infrared (J, H and Ks-band)2MASS survey. The selected objects have a mean central surfacebrightness within a 5'' radius around their centre fainter than 18 magarcsec-2 in the Ks band, making them the lowestsurface brightness galaxies detected by 2MASS. A description is given ofthe relevant properties of the 2MASS survey and the LSB galaxy selectionprocedure, as well as of basic photometric properties of the selectedobjects. The latter properties are compared to those of other samples ofgalaxies, of both LSBs and ``classical'' high surface brightness (HSB)objects, which were selected in the optical. The 2MASS LSBs have aBT_c-KT colour which is on average 0.9 mag bluerthan that of HSBs from the NGC. The 2MASS sample does not appear tocontain a significant population of red objects.All tables and Figs. 2a-c are only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org

The Westerbork HI survey of spiral and irregular galaxies. II. R-band surface photometry of late-type dwarf galaxies
R-band surface photometry is presented for 171 late-type dwarf andirregular galaxies. For a subsample of 46 galaxies B-band photometry ispresented as well. We present surface brightness profiles as well asisophotal and photometric parameters including magnitudes, diameters andcentral surface brightnesses. Absolute photometry is accurate to 0.1 magor better for 77% of the sample. For over 85% of the galaxies the radialsurface brightness profiles are consistent with published data withinthe measured photometric uncertainty. For most of the galaxies in thesample H I data have been obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis RadioTelescope. The galaxies in our sample are part of the WHISP project(Westerbork H I Survey of Spiral and Irregular Galaxies), which aims atmapping about 500 nearby spiral and irregular galaxies in H I. Theavailability of H I data makes this data set useful for a wide range ofstudies of the structure, dark matter content and kinematics oflate-type dwarf galaxies. Based on observations made with INT operatedon the island of La Palma by the Isaac Newton Group in the SpanishObservatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrofisicade Canarias. Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Visual search for galaxies near the northern crossing of the Supergalactic Plane by the Milky Way
We have visually examined 12 Palomar red plates for galaxies at lowGalactic latitude b, where the Supergalactic Plane (SGP) is crossed bythe Galactic Plane (GP), at Galactic longitude l~135 deg. The catalogueconsists of 2575 galaxy candidates, of which 462 have major axisdiameter d>=0.8 arcmin (uncorrected for extinction). Galaxycandidates can be identified down to --b--~=0 deg. One of our galaxycandidates (J24=Dwingeloo 1) has recently been discovered independentlyat 21 cm by Kraan-Korteweg et al. as a nearby galaxy. Comparisons withthe structures seen in the IRAS and UGC catalogues are made. We comparethe success rate of identifying galaxies using the IRAS Point SourceCatalogue under different colour selection criteria. The criteria thatrequire both the 60- and 100-μm fluxes to be of high quality have thehighest probability of selecting a galaxy (with d>=0.6 arcmin), butat the expense of selecting a smaller number of galaxies in total.

Northern dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies. II - The Green Bank neutral hydrogen survey
The paper reports neutral hydrogen observations of a large sample ofdwarf and other low surface brightness galaxies. A detailed discussionand error analysis of the observations are presented, and spectra aredisplayed for 329 galaxies detected for the first time, or detected withsubstantially better signal-to-noise ratios than achieved previously.The positions on the sky of 667 galaxies meeting the present selectioncriteria north of delta = 38 deg are shown. The distribution of theredshifts of galaxies detected at Green Bank is illustrated. The GreenBank detections tapered off strongly below the median H I flux of 3.7 Jykm/s detected at Arecibo: only 12 percent of the Green Bank sample wasdetected with smaller fluxes.

Groups of galaxies within 80 Mpc. II - The catalogue of groups and group members
This paper gives a catalog of the groups and associations obtained bymeans of a revised hierarchical algorithm applied to a sample of 4143galaxies with diameters larger than 100 arcsec and redshifts smallerthan 6000 km/s. The 264 groups of galaxies obtained in this way (andwhich contain at least three sample galaxies) are listed, with the looseassociations surrounding them and the individual members of eachaggregate as well; moreover, the location of every entity among 13regions corresponding roughly to superclusters is specified. Finally,1729 galaxies belong to the groups, and 466 to the associations, i.e.,the total fraction of galaxies within the various aggregates amounts to53 percent.

Additional members of the Local Group of galaxies and quantized redshifts within the two nearest groups
Published observational data on galaxies of redshift z less than about1000 km/s are compiled in extensive tables and diagrams and analyzed,searching for additional Local Group members among fainterhigher-redshift galaxies. A concentration toward the center of the LocalGroup and a concentration associated with NGC 55, NGC 300, and NGC 253are identified in the south Galactic hemisphere and characterized indetail. The galaxies near the centers of the concentrations are found toobey a quantization interval of Delta-cz0 = 72.4 km/s, as for the LocalGroup (Tifft, 1977); the accuracy of this finding is shown to be towithin + or - 8.2 km/s (for galaxies with redshifts known to + or - 8km/s) and to within 3-4 km/s (for a subset of galaxies with moreaccurately measured redshifts).

The Perseus supercluster
Results are presented of a redshift survey of galaxies with photographicmagnitudes less than or equal to 14.0 located between 0 h 15 min and 3 h20 min RA and 26 and 45 deg dec, the region identified with the Perseussupercluster. New redshifts are reported for 116 galaxies, and arecombined with literature data to obtain values for a total of 141galaxies in the region. Morphological classifications, diameters,position angles and ellipticities are also presented for all 141galaxies. The 116 galaxies in the sample with radial velocities between3700 and 9000 km/sec are found to form a supercluster with a filamentarystructure including the Perseus, A347, A262, NGC 383 and NGC 507clusters and with a mean velocity of 5327 km/sec. It is estimated thatsuperclusters occupy approximately 1% of the universe, with a mean freepath between superclusters of 285/h Mpc. Results support the view thatcluster- and supercluster-mass clouds fragment before galaxies andcommunicate anisotropic matter and velocity distributions to galaxies.The results are also noted to be consistent with intrinsic galacticredshifts and band structure.

Nearby groups of galaxies. I - The NGC 1023 group
With regard to new H I radial velocities of galaxies which have beenacquired in a large region around NGC 1023, a hierarchical clusteringtechnique is developed which merges entities sequentially on the basisof a maximization of the gravitational force. The hierarchy provides adirect estimate of the mass-to-light ratio that is required if any givenlevel is to be gravitationally bound. Arguments based on crossing timesand the application of the virial theorem lead to the identification ofa group of 13 galaxies in the region around NGC 1023 which is almostcertainly bound, and it is suggested that the superposed galaxy UGC 2080= IC 239 is located in the background. The derived virial-mass-to-lightratio is found to be 19 (plus 28, minus 14) solar masses/solarluminosities. Reasons related to the gravitational clustering theory fora possible underestimate of this mass are discussed, along with a meansof establishing a lower limit for the cosmological density parameter.
