Evolution of interacting binaries with a B type primary at birth
We revisited the analytical expression for the mass ratio distributionfor non-evolved binaries with a B type primary. Selection effectsgoverning the observations were taken into account in order to comparetheory with observations. Theory was optimized so as to fit best withthe observed q-distribution of SB1s and SB2s. The accuracy of thistheoretical mass ratio distribution function is severely hindered by theuncertainties on the observations. We present a library of evolutionarycomputations for binaries with a B type primary at birth. Some liberalcomputations including loss of mass and angular momentum during binaryevolution are added to an extensive grid of conservative calculations. Our computations are compared statistically to the observeddistributions of orbital periods and mass ratios of Algols. ConservativeRoche Lobe Over Flow (RLOF) reproduces the observed distribution oforbital periods but fails to explain the observed mass ratios in therange q in [0.4-1]. In order to obtain a better fit the binaries have tolose a significant amount of matter, without losing much angularmomentum.

Radial velocities of HIPPARCOS southern B8-F2 type stars
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of B8-F2 type starsobserved by the Hipparcos satellite. Observations were obtained withinthe framework of an ESO key-program. Radial velocities have beenmeasured using a cross-correlation method, the templates being a grid ofsynthetic spectra. The obtained precision depends on effectivetemperature and projected rotational velocity of the star as well as ona possible asymmetry of the correlation peak generally due to secondarycomponents. New spectroscopic binaries have been detected from theseasymmetries and the variability of the measured radial velocity.Simulations of binary and triple systems have been performed. Forbinaries our results have been compared with Hipparcos binary data.Adding the variable radial velocities, the minimum binary fraction hasbeen found 60% for physical systems. Radial velocities have beendetermined for 581 B8-F2 stars, 159 being new. Taking into accountpublished radial velocities, 39% south A-type stars with V magnitudelower than 7.5 have a radial velocity. MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. The λ 3984 feature in late-B spectroscopic binaries.
We report about a spectroscopic study aimed at searching the line Hg IIλ 3984 in a sample of 28 spectroscopic binaries with primaries inthe same temperature range as HgMn stars. One system, HD 75642, showsthis line very prominently. In another system, HD 41040, Hg may besomewhat overabundant, while HD 87751 shows marginal Mn and Penhancement. The present study does not bring a definitive answer to thequestion of the relation between binarity, slow rotation, and theappearance of HgMn anomalies in late B stars, possibly because othereffects (like the influence of a magnetic field), which could not betaken into consideration, are important too. In the course of thisstudy, 11 new double-lined spectroscopic binaries were discovered, 10 ofwhich were previously known as single-lined systems. Of particularinterest among them are 4 stars that may have the Si or He weakpeculiarities.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright OB-type stars.
For the detailed statistical analysis of the X-ray emission of hot starswe selected all stars of spectral type O and B listed in the Yale BrightStar Catalogue and searched for them in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Inthis paper we describe the selection and preparation of the data andpresent a compilation of the derived X-ray data for a complete sample ofbright OB stars.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The distribution of interstellar dust in the solar neighborhood
We surveyed the IRAS data base at the positions of the 1808 O6-B9.5stars in The Bright Star Catalog for extended objects with excessemission at 60 microns, indicating the presence of interstellar dust atthe location of the star. Within 400 pc the filling factor of theinterstellar medium, for dust clouds with a density greater than 0.5/cucm is 14.6 + or - 2.4%. Above a density of 1.0/cu cm, the densitydistribution function appears to follow a power law index - 1.25. Whenthe dust clouds are mapped onto the galactic plane, the sun appears tobe located in a low-density region of the interstellar medium of widthabout 60 pc extending at least 500 pc in the direction of longitudes 80deg - 260 deg, a feature we call the 'local trough'.

The spectroscopic orbit and subsynchronous rotation of the Herbig Ae/Be star TY CrA
High-resolution spectra of the Herbig Ae/Be eclipsing binary TY CrA areobtained and used to measure high-precision radial velocities. We findTY CrA to be a single-lined spectroscopic binary having a circular orbitwith a period of 2.88873 days, supporting a previous photometric periodof 2.888777 days. We also place an upper limit of 15 km/s on the v sin iof the primary. Such a low rotational velocity corresponds to highlysubsynchronous rotation, presuming the stellar rotation axis to have aninclination angle near 90. We argue that this remarkably slow rotationvelocity in a circular orbit cannot be explained in the context ofstellar evolution and tidal interactions alone. Presuming TY CrA to be apre-main-sequence star, the origin of its subsynchronism must lie in abraking mechanism early in the life of the primary. Finally, we notethat the lack of NIR excess emission indicates that no optically thickdisk material is present within a few orbital separations of the binary.

The low filling factor of dust in the Galaxy
The neighborhood of 745 luminous stars in the IRAS Skyflux plates wasexamined for the presence of dust heated by the nearby star. One-hundredtwenty-three dust clouds were found around only 106 of the stars with avolume filling factor of 0.006 and an intercloud separation of 46 pc.Nowhere was a region found where the dust is smoothly distributedthrough the volume of space heated by the star; hence an upper limit of0.06/cu cm is placed on the equivalent gas density in the intercloudregions. Due to the lack of IR emission near the star, it is found thatless than 1 percent of the stellar luminosity is reprocessed within 10pc of the star. The clouds have an average density of 0.22/cu cm and aradius of 1.9 pc, albeit with wide variations in their properties. Twodifferent scale heights of 140 and 540 pc were found for the number ofclouds around different groups of stars, which are interpreted asevidence for different distributions of dust in and out of the Galacticdisk.

Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations
Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Effects of stellar rotation on the Geneva photometric system
The effects of stellar rotation on colors and parameters of the Genevaphotometric system are considered, using homogeneous material. Attentionis focused on these parameters useful for deriving physical propertiesof B- and A-type stars. Two major photometric planes in this respect, the (X, Y) plane and the (d, Delta) plane, are not discernibly affectedby rotation. The temperature parameter, B(2) - V(1) is reddened byrotation to an extent that is in agreement with model calculations foruniformly rotating stars.

A photometric survey of the bright southern Be stars
Repeated UBV photometric measurements were made of the 86 bright Bestars south of declination -20 deg, and a network of comparison starswas set up. From a statistical study of the differential photometry itwas found that short- or intermediate-term variability seems to beoccurring in about half of the Be stars, and to be more evident in thestars of earlier spectral type. It was also possible to identify 11individual short- or intermediate-term variables. Four of these (all ofearly B spectral type) appear to exhibit significant variability on atime-scale of a day or less. More intensive observations of one of thesestars, 28 Omega CMA, indicate short-term variations consistent with thepublished spectroscopic period of 1.37 day.

Orbital inclinations of late B-type spectroscopic binaries
Information on the orbital inclinations j of late B-type spectroscopicbinaries (SB's) with periods between 3 and 50 days is obtained from themasses M1 of their primary components, derived from uvby-betaphotometry, and the values of M1 sin cubed j. The cumulativedistribution of j for a fairly complete sample of double-lined binaries(SB2's) with Hg-Mn primaries is consistent with that expected for randomorientations of the orbital planes. The period-eccentricity relationsfor Hg-Mn SB's and normal, sharp-lined SB's do not differ significantly.Subsynchronous rotators occur among the components of Hg-Mn SB's (e.g.HR266, Kappa-Cnc, HR 4072, Chi-Lup and 74 Aqr) and superficially normalSB's (e.g. 64Ori, HR 7338 and possibly HR 4892); the subsynchronousprimary of HR 7338 is metal poor. The slow rotation of Hg-Mn stars isprobably due to special initial conditions or to a substantial loss ofangular momentum during contraction to the main sequence. The orbitalperiods of three of the SB2's with nonsynchronous Hg-Mn components (HR266, AR Aur and 74 Aqr) are only about 4 days, and these systems maypose a difficulty for the hypothesis that the abundance anomalies aredue to the separation of elements by diffusion in quiescent atmospheres.

Close visual binaries. I - MK classifications
Each component of 170 close visual binaries has been classified with newprocedures for controlling contamination problems. These classificationsare presented and are shown to be on the MK system. Two sources of areascanner UBV photometry were compared in order to establish homogeneousphotometric as well as spectroscopic data. From a consideration ofsystematic errors in the V magnitude difference (Delta V) betweencomponents the photometry of Hurly and Warner (1983) is to be preferred.Absolute magnitudes for each binary are derived from Delta V via atested MK - M(v) map.

Equivalent widths of spectral lines in B stars
Previously published equivalent widths of 26 strong spectral linesmeasured at various reciprocal dispersions, ranging from 1 to 75 A/mm,in 172 B stars and 14 A stars are collected and analyzed. The linesconsidered include H-alpha and H-beta; six of He I and one of He II; oneof C III; two of N II and one of N III; two of O II; one of Mg II; twoeach of Si II, Si III, and Si IV; one of Ca II; and three of Fe II. Acomparison of the measurements made at the different reciprocaldispersions reveals that the equivalent width of a given line increasessystematically with decreasing reciprocal dispersion. Only measurementsmade at a reciprocal dispersion of not more than 40 A/mm are used toplot average curves showing equivalent width as a function of spectraltype and luminosity class for all 26 lines. In all but two cases (He Iat 4121 A and Ca II at 4267 A), the behavior of the lines as a functionof temperature and gravity is found to be in accordance withmodel-atmosphere theory.

Duplicity of late B-type stars
High-dispersion spectroscopic observations of 83 stars are used todetermine the binary characteristics of late B-type stars. For a randomsample of such objects, including peculiar as well as normal stars, thefrequency of binaries with mass ratios m2/m sub 1 greaterthan 0.1 and orbital periods less than 100 days is estimated to be about24%, and the frequency of binaries decreases with decreasingm2/m sub 1. In both respects, the late B-type stars aresimilar to early B-, late A-, and solar-type stars. For the majority ofstars with an orbital period greater than 4 days, the observedrotational velocity exceeds the value that corresponds to synchronism ofrotation and revolution, but the ratio of the observed to thesynchronous rotational velocity seldom exceeds a factor of 2 even forperiods as long as 15 days. An additional 20% of the stars surveyedexhibit low amplitude-velocity variations that, if due to orbitalmotion, correspond to m2 m1 less than 0.1. Themost likely explanation is that these systems are close binary remnantsthat have already passed through the mass-transfer phase, with thepresent secondary being a white dwarf.

Structure and age of the local association /Pleiades group/
Intermediate-band indices are used to derive luminosities for some 500early-type stars with well-determined proper motions and radialvelocities. Space motion vectors and galactic coordinates are computedfor the stars considered. It is found that the local association membersare mainly concentrated in the Sco-Cen region in the Southern Hemisphereand the Cas-Tau region in the north.

A system of standard stars for rotational velocity determinations
Profiles for the He I lambda 4471, Mg II lambda 4481, and Fe I lambda4476 lines were measured in the spectra of 217 bright northern andsouthern stars of types O9-F9, using photoelectric scans andphotographic coude spectrograms obtained at the Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory, Kitt Peak National Observatory, and LowellObservatory. Half-intensity widths of the observed line profiles werecompared with the corresponding quantities in a set of theoreticalrotationally-broadened line profiles computed using the model-atmosphereapproach. The resulting v sin i's are used to establish a system ofstandard rotational velocity stars, for use in estimating v sin idirectly from visual inspection of spectrograms. An atlas ofrotationally broadened spectra is presented, showing the effects ofrotation on spectra of representative B-, A-, and F-type stars.
